Open MRI

The Centre boasts an Hitachi Oasis open MRI scanner which is the first high field open scanner available in the UK. This next-generation MRI scanner is a truly open, vertical field, whole body magnet that:

• Allows patients a 270 degree unobstructed view whilst they are having their MRI Scan
• Includes the largest patient table at 81cm wide
• Is equipped with the most powerful standard gradient package available on a 1.2T scanner

The open MRI scanner is designed to provide optimal image quality comparable to traditional closed or tunnel MRI scanners, while also keeping patient comfort in mind. Many patients are anxious or claustrophobic in closed MRI scanners, but the new Oasis provides an open view, allowing for a more comfortable patient experience. The scanner offers flexibilityof positioning to put patients at ease whilst having their MRI scan. The facility and equipment is patient friendly, ensuring the experience of undergoing a scan is as comfortable for the patient as possible.

The open MRI scanner is particularly suitable for patients who may be:

• Claustrophobic
• Bariatric
• Have limited mobility
• Anxious
• Children or newborn
• Elderly
• Or simply prefer the option of being scanned on an open MRI scanner

The open scanner has been very successful in scanning patients who are unable to be scanned in a conventional scanner, either because they are bariatric or suffer from claustrophobia. 96% of patients who are unable to be scanned in a conventional scanner have been successfully scanned in the Open MRI Scanner.
